Hi there from Prince Edward Island,

Thank you for your inquiry to Ask an Islander. My family camped a lot around the Island when our children were younger. Personally, I prefer smaller parks when trying to keep eyes on the kids. As a starting point, I would recommend any of the following three campgrounds:

  • Somers by the Beach Campground is located just 23 km from the ferry. It is a family-run operation that offers kayaks and paddle boards (no extra charge), a swimming pool and playground. Next door is Kings Castle Provincial Park with life-size fairy tale characters, another playground and a canteen with family-friendly ice cream prices. 2-way sites start at $43/night.
  • Cornwall KOA is located riverside just outside of Charlottetown with a heated outdoor pool, daily programming for children and playgrounds. 2-way sites start at $40/night
  • Cavendish KOA offers much the same as above in terms of amenities. 2-way sites start at $47/night.

The following are the largest campgrounds on the Island and very popular for families. Their price points are higher as these RV parks do offer more on-site attractions and services.

  • Marco Polo in Cavendish offers theme weeks and a giant on-site water park.2-way sites start at $50/night with weekly rates available.
  • Twin Shores is located west of Kensington in Darnley with a beautiful white sand beach, daily activities, theme weeks, etc. 2-ways sites start at $62/night.

All private campgrounds book up quickly in summer so I would advise you to contact any of interest soon, if interested.

The most economical place to camp on the Island is a provincial park campground. Two-way sites start at $36. Prince Edward Island has eight provincial campgrounds located across the province. Search for parks with campgrounds as type at tourismpei.com/what-to-do/beaches-parks. Beginning April 12, you can book online or call toll-free 1-877-445-4938 for assistance. Most beaches are supervised and recreational programming is offered. Personally, I love the views from Red Point Provincial Park and its proximity to Basin Head Provincial Park

Be sure to sign-up for our 2022 Visitor's Guide which will be available in April.

All the best in planning your summer vacation to Prince Edward Island. I'll leave you with this blog post for more budget-friendly adventure ideas.

Regards,

Verna Lynne
