My family and I are looking for the most picturesque lighthouse to visit in PEI. We would love to hear your recommendations.

Hey Livia,

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander about PEI lighthouses. I must admit that your question is a bit of a tough one! Almost every lighthouse and range light on PEI has something special going for it. Without knowing exactly where you'll be staying, it’s hard to narrow it down. Still, I’ve put together a list of the ones I really like, from east to west.

East Point Lighthouse is way out on the eastern tip of the Island. It’s 64 feet tall and has been standing there since 1867.

Cape Bear Lighthouse, built in 1881, has a cool replica of the old Marconi station. It’s believed to be the first Canadian land station to pick up the Titanic distress signal.

Point Prim is the oldest lighthouse here and has a great little museum inside. It is unique, as it is the only round brick lighthouse on PEI and one of three in Canada. It was built in 1845. Bonus: it’s just down the road from the Point Prim Chowder House, where you can enjoy a mean seafood chowder.

St. Peter’s Harbour lighthouse (pictured below) isn’t active anymore, but it’s absolutely gorgeous. Set among huge white sand dunes, it’s a bit off the beaten path and totally worth finding.

The lighthouse at Covehead Harbour (pictured below) is inside the PEI National Park and practically across the road from Richard’s Fish and Chips (totally worth a stop). There’s a plaque on the lighthouse about the Yankee Gale, which is a pretty intense bit of Island history. Read more about the storm at French River, home of another nice light.

And over on the west side of the Island is West Point Lighthouse. It’s still a working beacon and also operates as an inn and museum. It's got a cool look and is said to be haunted, if you’re into that sort of thing!

You can go inside most of these, except for Covehead and St. Peter’s Harbour.

Hope you have a fantastic time exploring Prince Edward Island and that one of these lighthouses grabs your fancy!

Cheers,

Rod
