On your map in the visitor guide you show green trails for hiking and bikes. Are they separate from the road, ie) beside the road - or are they on the road along with the cars?
Hello Elaine,
Thank you for your question to Ask an Islander.
We have so many wonderful biking, hiking and walking trails across the Island.
Confederation Trail is on the old decommissioned train tracks. They do cross roads in some places. The trail travels from one tip of the island to the other. This trail will see walkers, cyclists and in some areas the occasional horse rider.
The Island Walk is a walking trail, which can be biked. It uses some of the Confederation Trail and routes along red dirt roads, highways, beaches and much more. You will encounter a few road sections here for sure.
Gulf Shore Parkway West runs between the Parkway and the shore all the way to North Rustico Beach. This is a scenic trail through rolling hills, with many beaches along the way. It is mostly paved and uncovered trail used for road biking, running, and strolling! Some good ups and downs, not too strenuous uphills. You can also continue to travel in the Brackley and Dalvay part of the Gulf Shore Parkway East. There are many trails in the Prince Edward Island National Park.
Island Trails site is wonderful for the walking and hiking trails on the island. These are mainly free of road travel.
You will find, many of the island roads are adding a bike lane for cycling and walking. It is still a wonderful work in progress, but it is starting to come together nicely.
The map in the 2024 Prince Edward Island Tourism Guide shows the coastal drives in each of the regions. These are all road driving areas.
Happy vacation planning,
Erin Davis
