Can I eat snails I find at low tide?

Answer by:

Good morning from Prince Edward Island,

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander about eating snails, also known as periwinkles. Personally, I love shellfish but have never eaten snails. However, I have found a source (AMA Insider) that indicates one of our Authentic PEI Experiences, the Mussel & Lobster Shore Boil, includes cooking them up with other foraged shellfish in a seafood boil.

When foraging, ensure that the beach is open to harvesting. Anytime an area is closed due to dangerous bacterial and biotoxin levels, signs will be posted by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Enjoy your time on Prince Edward Island.
