I’m traveling solo. I have a rental car and am staying in Murray River for the week. I want to experience the historic culture, see beautiful sights, and relax. What can you recommend for a solo woman in her 40s?

Hi Liz,
Thank you for reaching out on Ask An Islander. Travelling solo in PEI will be a wonderful adventure!
Let's start with history and visit the Cape Bear Lighthouse. This was the first spot in Canada to receive the distress signal from the Titanic. Climb to the top of the lighthouse for a view of the PEI shoreline and Nova Scotia across the water. While in the area, on a side road in Murray River, there are the remnants of a mill just past a dam. I often stop at this shady, peaceful spot to enjoy the view of the river. You might even see a blue heron or an eagle fly overhead!
In the Montague area, there is the Garden of the Gulf Museum and the Roma at Three Rivers National Historic Site, a recreation of an 18th-century French settlement.
Further afield in Charlottetown, visit Beaconsfield House and do a walking tour of the city, taking notice of the heritage buildings. You can pick up a map at the Visitor Information Centre or City Hall on Queen Street.
Cavendish is home to the charming Green Gables Heritage Place and Lucy Maud Montgomery sites. Endless sand dunes and clear waters await you at the beaches in this area.
Back in the Murray River area, most red roads lead to the shore where you can find a stretch of sandy beach. There, you can search for shells and beach glass and enjoy the solitude!
In the evening, head to Murray Harbour for a meal at Harbourview Restaurant.. Wander across the bridge to stop in at Nellie's Landing on the water. Join a table for trivia on Thursday evening or enjoy some music on the weekend. I am certain your host in Murray River will give you tips on other places to enjoy. I hope that your PEI vacation is what you want it to be.
Regards,
Charlene
