Tourism PEI

Rod, My wife and I are hikers & bikers. We enjoy sunrises and sunsets. We don't enjoy cruise crowds. We have 2-4 days on PEI what general location should we search fairly high quality lodging.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander. There is great cycling and hiking on PEI, no matter where you decide to stay.

You asked for some higher quality lodging; I have some suggestions and I will preface this by saying that on PEI, all short-term lodging operators are required to be licensed with the province. Therefore, you can expect clean, well-appointed, and accommodating service wherever you decide to stay. However, there are some standouts, as follows.

We'll start in Charlottetown. The Great George and The Holman Grand are both top-rated hotels, independently (and locally) owned, and have all the perks. My preference is the Great George for the character of its rooms, which are spread out over a dozen or more buildings in downtown Charlottetown. But both are centrally located in the city and offer access to the waterfront and are close to the beginning of the Confederation Trail, which is a popular cycling destination.

If you would prefer to be outside of the city, I'd recommend Blackbush Beach Resort in Tracadie. Here, you will find beautiful views, great dining and music. The resort's  experience manager, Ian, will help you craft a visit to remember. He is very good at his job - top notch! It is located on the north shore and next to the PEI National Park, which affords visitors lots of hiking, swimming and cycling.

Finally, the Inn at Bay Fortune is probably one of the best places to stay and eat in Canada. It offers high-end accommodation on a working seasonal farm. Even if you are not interested in staying at the inn, you must book dinner there. Chef Michael Smith has created something special at his restaurant, the Fireworks Feast. It's like dinner and a show, except the dinner is the show. If you're interested, please now!

I hope you and you wife enjoy every minute of you visit to our home. We love it and we think you will too!

Cheers,

Rod
