Where to visit to see the true culture of the people on PE.I

Answer by:

Hello Cheryl.

Thank you for your question to Ask an Islander.

There are so many ways for me to answer this question, so I shall try my best.

Visit Orwell Corner Historical Village to learn about the charm of growing up in a small village on Prince Edward Island in the 1890s. Then visit Roma at Three Rivers National Historical Site and step back into the 1730s of John Pierre Roma's trading post. The Basin Head Fisheries Museum will teach you about inshore fishing and the history around it and the communities. Elmira Railway Museum will teach you about how Islanders got around the Island and moved supplies. The railway was very important to the families and communities on the Island.

In Charlottetown visit Beaconsfield Historic House, and see how the wealthy once lived. While driving around the central drive, the Farmer's Bank of Rustico Museum & 1772 Acadian Log House is very important. Farmer's Bank is credited with beginning the credit union movement in North America!

The Acadian Museum is a wonderful exhibit of the Acadians from 1720 to the present day.

The Alberton Museum & Genealogy Centre is filled with unique information on the area and the people who reside there.

In O'Leary, visit the Canadian Potato Museum and learn the history of our farmers and the equipment they use.

Bideford Parsonage Museum not only gives you a glimpse into L.M. Montgomery but also into the lives of Islanders in the day.

Visit the museums, climb a lighthouses, shop in small towns, search for the best seafood chowder, attend festival and events and find what makes Prince Edward Island culture so unique.

Happy vacation planning,

Erin Davis
