Where would be the best beaches for swimming and walking (not crowded). Where to go for lobster supper in a local church?

Good morning;

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander. This is a great question and one I'm happy to answer as I recently helped with this Globe and Mail article titled Discover the beaches of Prince Edward Island. This list is certainly not exhaustive and not all beaches listed match your request. Thus, here is a list of my top recommendations for you:

  1. Canoe Cove at low tide is great for walking. The warm waters are great for swimming too, albeit you'll have to walk a bit to get to any depth of water.
  2. The beach at North Rustico is less crowded than Cavendish or Brackley in the PEI National Park. It is great for both swimming and walking. Beyond the beach, walk the boardwalk along the harbour to the end of the wharf to discover little shops and great restaurants - Blue Mussel Cafe, Tide & Tales and Cricker's Creamery for ice cream.
  3. Cousin's Shore in Darnley has a long stretch of white sand. Follow the red dirt road to the end. Note: Parking can be a challenge and there are no amenities at this beach (see G&M list from above link).
  4. The beach at Cedar Dunes is within a provincial park and close to the West Point Lighthouse. A beautiful location along North Cape Coastal Drive.
  5. To the east, the best beach in my opinion is Basin Head. However, it can be crowded, especially on weekends. My second choice would be the long stretch of white sand and dunes at Shipwreck Point Beach at Naufrage.

There are so many others. Best beaches are such a personal choice. Ask another Islander and you may get an entirely different answer.

In terms of lobster supper, you may be thinking of St. Ann's Lobster Suppers, which no longer operates and has not for about 15 years. However, two others offer a similar experience - Fisherman's Wharf in North Rustico and New Glasgow Lobster Suppers - and are located within minutes of each other.

I invite you to download or order our 2024 visitor’s guide. You can always stay in touch by signing up for the Tourism PEI newsletter which includes details on upcoming festivals and events and recipes too!

Have a wonderful summer vacation!
