Food & Seafood

Who serves the best lobster roll?

Lobster rolls are extremely popular menu items from tip to tip of the Island. Richard’s Fresh Seafood is one of the Island’s longest-running fish shacks, serving customers for more than 40 years at Covehead Wharf, and their lobster rolls are beloved by both visitors and locals alike! Their lemon and chive mayo is the perfect accent to the fresh chunks of lobster meat.

Another great place to get a lobster roll is Dave's Lobster. They have 2 locations on the Island, one in Charlottetown and one in Cavendish. The menu is simple and each offering is thoughtful and deliberate. My recommendation would be, if you are dining with someone else, order one "Local's" roll and one "Some Fancy". This will give you a great range of experience with the flavour profiles a lobster can have when served both hot and chilled.

If you're heading east towards Belfast, Point Prim Chowder House is a must-visit. In addition to lobster rolls, their lobster and brie grilled cheese is absolutely fantastic!

These 3 spots are just the tip of the iceberg. Be sure to check out The Grotto, Lobster Barn, and The Seafood Shack.

Enjoy! ~ Chef ILona Daniel

Where can I get a traditional lobster supper?

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander about lobster suppers. With two famous traditional lobster suppers only 6.8 km apart, there really is no need for a map. Find Fisherman's Wharf Lobster Suppers in North Rustico and New Glasgow Lobster Suppers down the road on the River Clyde. In Charlottetown,  popular locations for lobster dinners are MacKinnon's Wharf and Water Prince Corner Shop.

Where can I buy fresh seafood?

You can buy fresh (uncooked) shellfish, including lobster, oysters and mussels from several retailers. For a complete list, please visit lobsterpei.ca/wheretobuy/. In Charlottetown, MR Seafood has a great reputation. Also, if you need guidance on cooking your feast, visit the following pages:

And, if by chance, you have leftovers, here's some advice on freezing seafood.

Outdoor Activities (Biking, Hiking & Fishing)

Who offers transportation service for long-distance hikers?

Several local companies provide bag transfer and transportation service for long-distance hikers, including MacQueen's Island Tours, PEI Tours, Freewheeling Adventures, PEI Guide & Drive and Go for a Walk. Have fun planning your trip! ~ Bryson Guptill

Where is the best place to go bass fishing?

You can angle for bass on both the North Shore and the South Shore. In the west, good beaches include West Point and Jacques Cartier beach. Many of the bridges in the area also offer decent fishing. The road bridge in Alaska is a popular area for lures. They are catching bass off the wharf in Northport as well. In Queens County, the North Shore beaches are best. Try the rocky beaches of the PEI National Park in Rustico and Cavendish. In Kings County, both the North and South shore beaches allow for good fishing. For fly and lure fishing, try shallow flats where schools of Striped Bass are feeding. Check out the PEI Striped Bass Facebook page and look for Mackenzie Sapier, who is an avid bass angler offering tips on shore fishing for striped bass. Good luck and enjoy your Island fishing trip! ~ Marney & Wade MacKinnon
