The 2017 PEI Fall Flavours Festival
Throughout September, the annual Fall Flavours Festival shines a spotlight on PEI’s tradition of authentic, local cuisine. Restaurants design menus tailored specifically to the festival, and chefs both local and celebrity host hands-on events meant to give the public a greater appreciation of the quality of Island food. These events are spread over the entire province, covering fishing, farming – and, of course, feasting!
One such event is Field to Fork, hosted by Chef Roark Mackinnon. He’ll lead groups through the countryside on a producer tour, showing everything and everyone that will be contributing to the tour’s closing four-course fire-roasted dinner at The Table Culinary Studio. Pick some of Al Pickett’s black garlic to put in your artisanal bread, collect vegetables from Sandy MacKay’s organic farm, talk sheep with Nancy and Ken Sanderson, and check on your appetizers at Green Gables Oysters. After that, it’s back to The Table, where Chef Mackinnon will cook your meal right before your eyes, explaining every step of his process. Finally, you’ll dig into a meal you know absolutely everything about!
For those that would rather stay under one roof, there’s The Great Big BBQ at the PEI Brewing Company. There you’ll find the best the Island has to offer, including potato, beef, and seafood dishes, prepared by the Food Network’s Chef Corbin alongside chefs of the Murphy Hospitality Group. To make the evening even better, local beers and wine pairings will be available.
But the Festival’s entrée is the Taste of Coastal Communities series. These three separate events – hosted in Georgetown, Tyne Valley, and North Rustico – pair local restaurants’ cooking with beautiful by-the-water backdrops for the finest Island dining experience possible. At each event a celebrity chef will work beside their Island peers: Paul Rogalski at Georgetown, Jessie Vergen at Tyne Valley, and Connie DeSousa and John Jackson at North Rustico.
No matter what events you choose to attend, you’ll be treated to food prepared by some of the best chefs around. Whether its local legends like Kyle Paton or world-wide celebrities like Michael Smith, every Fall Flavours kitchen will be cooking with passion and expertise.
