The 2017 PEI Fall Flavours Festival

Throughout September, the annual Fall Flavours Festival shines a spotlight on PEI’s tradition of authentic, local cuisine. Restaurants design menus tailored specifically to the festival, and chefs both local and celebrity host hands-on events meant to give the public a greater appreciation of the quality of Island food. These events are spread over the entire province, covering fishing, farming – and, of course, feasting!

One such event is Field to Fork, hosted by Chef Roark Mackinnon. He’ll lead groups through the countryside on a producer tour, showing everything and everyone that will be contributing to the tour’s closing four-course fire-roasted dinner at The Table Culinary Studio. Pick some of Al Pickett’s black garlic to put in your artisanal bread, collect vegetables from Sandy MacKay’s organic farm, talk sheep with Nancy and Ken Sanderson, and check on your appetizers at Green Gables Oysters. After that, it’s back to The Table, where Chef Mackinnon will cook your meal right before your eyes, explaining every step of his process. Finally, you’ll dig into a meal you know absolutely everything about!

For those that would rather stay under one roof, there’s The Great Big BBQ at the PEI Brewing Company. There you’ll find the best the Island has to offer, including potato, beef, and seafood dishes, prepared by the Food Network’s Chef Corbin alongside chefs of the Murphy Hospitality Group. To make the evening even better, local beers and wine pairings will be available.

But the Festival’s entrée is the Taste of Coastal Communities series. These three separate events – hosted in Georgetown, Tyne Valley, and North Rustico – pair local restaurants’ cooking with beautiful by-the-water backdrops for the finest Island dining experience possible. At each event a celebrity chef will work beside their Island peers: Paul Rogalski at Georgetown, Jessie Vergen at Tyne Valley, and Connie DeSousa and John Jackson at North Rustico.

No matter what events you choose to attend, you’ll be treated to food prepared by some of the best chefs around. Whether its local legends like Kyle Paton or world-wide celebrities like Michael Smith, every Fall Flavours kitchen will be cooking with passion and expertise.

The Inn at Bay Fortune

If you’re looking for something out-of-the-ordinary, something that will take your breath away in both, taste, smell and feel… look no further. The Inn at Bay Fortune is not just any Inn but it is the home to a stellar destination located on 46 acres in Eastern PEI.

It is known for its beautiful scenic landscape sitting on a hill overlooking over the Bay Fortune and amazing cuisine.


It has won numerous awards though; the most distinguished consist of the TIAPEI Operator of the year in 1995 and Hospitality in 1998, Taste Our Island award in 2012, CAA/AAA award in 2002 – 2014 and Wine Spectator award in 2008 and 2014. In saying that, the food critics are not the only ones who are raving about The Inn at Bay Fortune; but the guests as well! Fifty seven percent of Trip Advisors ratings were above average leaving over half of the Inn at Bay Fortune patrons with ‘very good’ and ‘excellent’ descriptions of their stays.

This spectacular location was not always so pristine. David Wilmer, the current Inn Keeper first walked into an early 1900’s run-down old summer home and turned it around into a 17 room Inn with covered patio dining. This particular dining room has been recognized as one of Canada’s best while incorporating vegetables fresh from their garden behind the Inn. Chef Dana Wood, the current chef at David’s restaurant goes above and beyond for his guests to assure that they are happy and enjoys embedding fresh organic herbs and vegetables into nearly every dish he serves.


Having gone to the restaurant this past weekend, I felt at home surrounded by great views and people. The menu had provided us with a three course Table d’Hôte menu and being a meat lover I chose to split the two-person Charcuterie as well as the burger while the rest of my party all ordered the steak. This particular Charcuterie was one of the best I’ve ever had. The meats were handpicked, pickles had been pickled by the Chef himself and everything melted beautifully together. The burger and steaks were also more than noteworthy. The first thing that came out of my neighbors mouth was “that is a perfectly cooked rare steak” – words that do not often appear at a dinner table. Our desserts arrived and all of the vibrant colors on our plates were exposed. The mint green ice cream, luscious red strawberries and dark chocolates were all heavenly. Needless to say, we all left a little bit heavier but beaming from ear to ear. A definite must-do on Prince Edward Island.
